How to pay yourself as a small business owner

Date

Big job pays, you take a chunk. Slow month, you take nothing and stress. Sound familiar?

That is not a paycheck. That is raiding the register. And it makes it impossible to tell if the business is actually supporting you.

Here is the simple fix most of our owners end up loving: pick a steady amount and pay yourself that same number on the same day, every week or every other week. Boring on purpose.

How do you pick the number? Look at what is actually left after the bills, the tax set-aside, and the slow-season cushion. Start lower than you want. If cash keeps piling up after a few months, give yourself a raise.

When the business has a monster month, the extra stays in the business until you decide on purpose to take a bonus. That is how jobs stay funded and you stop guessing.
