The business debit card bought groceries. Or kids’ clothes. Or the family dinner after a long install day.
It hit the bank feed. Someone categorized it as Meals or Supplies because that was the closest button. Profit dipped for a personal run.
That is the mix trap. Blue-collar owners live out of one wallet more often than they admit — especially when the business account is the only card in the truck. One swipe feels harmless. A month of them turns the P&L into a mash of company costs and life costs.
On cash-basis books, cash left the business. That part is true. Calling it a business expense when it was dinner with your spouse is how you stop trusting the number at the bottom. Free cash looks thinner for the wrong reasons.
You do not need a shame lecture. You need a simple habit: personal stuff gets marked personal (owner draw / personal), job stuff stays job. Books you can trust beat books that feel busy.
If personal and business are tangled in your QuickBooks feed, that is exactly what monthly bookkeeping is for. Want it sorted? Get in touch.
